Time has shown that we are not as young as we use to be and we have decide on adding a davit to move the dingy on and off the roof. We are going to try to add a davit that is removable so it can be broken down and stored. The unit we have is rated for 200 lb so hopefully it will work out. If not we might have to go with a more standard type type davit that is stationary.

I going to try to make the foot for the davit removable so we can use the davit on either the Port or Starboard side of the boat depending on our rafting situation etc. I built the bracket out of starboard with aluminum angle stock to make the the mechanical connects between the pieces.

The top is supported by a slip ring that will be mounted to the edge of the roof extension. I pretty sure the roof will support the load as I can hang my weight from the roof top with very minimal flexing of the roof.

Just to be safe I also added a stainless steel backing plate that will be thru bolt into the roof extension. I just need a few nice days to drill the holes out and fill them with epoxy to seal the coring material.

More pictures to follow when the weather permits me to move forward with the project.

Looks like we are going to have a few dry days so I drilled the holes out for the bracket to thru bolt into the roof extension. I then filled the holes with epoxy. I will use a little smaller drill bit when installing the bolts and this will keep the coring sealed. I used a small clamp with cardboard to support a small piece of plastic to support the epoxy/filler whole it drys.

Here is a little tip I got from Bob R when using gell coat. I just decided to apply the idea to filling these holes. The tape makes clean up much easier.

The davit is done! Works well and certainly better on my back then trying to lift the dingy.

Thinking of adding an additional support because of some deflection in the post. Unfortunately my machine (welder) isn't set up for stainlees steel (yet?).
This is what the gusset/support plates would look like.

As usual, nice job Barry but isn't the dinghy going to be in the way when you add the second story to Scotia Mist?

What are the 2 gray things with the black straps/handles that are under the stern of the dinghy? Are they some kind of chocks you've attached to the roof or are they something attached to the dinghy?

Is this the most reluctant Spring ever?!!!

Hi Pete,
Sorry for the late response. Karen and I were down in the Caribbean last week and the internet service on the cruise ship is crazy $$$ so I limited my time on the net.

  Thanks for the compliment
No plans for a second station on the roof..........yet Grin
The two gray and black things are built in trim tabs. Also notice built in wheels for moving the dingy around.
You can see them in this picture.

Barry,

That looks pretty neat. I purchased some wheels to install on our dinghy but have not done it yet. Can't quite decide if they'll be worth the extra weight & being in the way when we slide it into the cockpit. More & more, we've just been sliding the dinghy into the cockpit while cruising. It's a 10' 4" dinghy but if I slide it accross the cockpit upside down & then angle it back with the stern tubes straddling the roof support, it doesn't stick out too much. When we get where we're going, it's about 10 seconds to launch it & only about a minute to pull it into the cockpit & tie it down. Originally, we slid it in right side up but in rough seas, some water would splash in it. The wheels go against my KISS principle but there definitely are times when they'd nice.

When's your launch date? We're going in 5/6/09 & I can't wait!!!

 Pete,
I've got to agree with you on the KISS when it comes to the dingy. We wanted the RIB because we shuttle Cocoa back and forth for visits and thought it would be nice to have the elevated floor so as to not get our feet wet . However the extra weight and size is a handful. It is nice once you're where you need to be and have it in the water and using it.

Matt and Laurie have a Walker Bay inflatable. Karen and I got a good look at it when we were at Cuttyhunk. Thats when we started looking at the Walker Bay models. So I will blame all of this extra size dingy and davit on Matt and Laurie Grin  (just kidding Wink)

I'm getting close to finishing up on the last of this springs improvements. Pretty much done making a mess inside the cabin so Karen is going to get inside with a vacuum and bucket of Mr Clean and give everything a good wipe down over the weekend.
Might be in for next weekend 5/8-5/9?
